The Academy of Art University is a large private art and design school in San Francisco. The University is spread out over numerous buildings all over the City. The Motion Picture and Television program is concentrated around the University's New Montgomery headquarters, with an annex in China Basin that houses a soundstage and is where acting classes are held.

The University offers both BFA and MFA degrees with an emphasis placed on students being trained in specialities, as a matter of professional preperation.

The school is known for having an exceptional amount of equipment that students are able to gain access to, ranging from DV cams to 35mm rigs. In addition to the production and acting classes offered as part of the School of Motion Pictures and Television the art design and computer animation programs offer training for those who wish to go into the fields of production deign, concept art, and visual fx.

The Academy of Art University was founded in 1929 by Richard S. Stephens, who at the time was the Creative Director of Sunset Magazine, as a tool for teaching art for advertising. From this seed the school has grown over the decades, all the while under the stewardship of the Stephens family, expanding into other artistic disciplines while maintaining an emphasis on professional development.
